Healthy bikes for Ballymacash and St Lukes pupils

Pupils and staff at Ballymacash Primary School in north Lisburn are now set for a safe pedal to school after their bikes were given a once-over by staff at JM Hanna bike shop is the town.

The health-check was organised by charity Sustrans, who have just started working with the school to enable more pupils to get to school regularly on two-wheels.

As well as having their bikes receive a once over from John and Gavin from the shop, pupils and staff were given helpful hints to make sure that their bikes are in good working order.

Pamela Grove-White of Sustrans works with the school.  She said, “It’s important that we all make sure our bikes are in good condition, and is was great to have JM Hanna staff on hand to provide some simple tips.

“The school already has a cycling champion, and Sustrans is looking forward to working with Ballymacash Primary to enable more pupils to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.”

Sustrans works with 16 schools in Northern Ireland , in partnership with the Public Health Agency, Sport Northern Ireland, Bike Hub, Active Belfast and DRD Travelwise.  In west Belfast , Sustrans works with Bunscoil Phobal Feirste, St John the Baptist girls, St John the Baptist boys, St Oliver Plunkett Primary and De La Salle College.

Sustrans’ ‘Free Range Kids’ campaign aims to create environments that encourage independent, active children. It calls for area-wide 20mph speed limits in residential and built up areas and investment from government in safe routes to make walking and cycling the norm for local journeys, particularly the school run.
